Your CHECKLIST to Hiring A Trader
Does the contractor/trader hold all relevant licences and insurances to carry out the works agreed upon, e.g. do they have Public Liability insurance?
Does the contractor/trader hold all relevant certificates and accreditations, e.g. are they gas safe registered? (tradespeople carrying out gas works by law are required to be gas safe registered), do they have a Part P qualification for carrying out electrical works?
When it comes to larger projects, e.g. home extensions, loft conversions, house renovations, do they have the expertise and experience to take on projects of this scope?
Has the trader/contractor worked on projects similar to yours recently, and can they show you references?
Is the trader/contractor reputable? What did other homeowners have to say (reviews) about using their services, and did they recommend them?
Company information/trading history – how long has the contractor/trader been trading for, and are they a Ltd registered company?
- We also recommend confirming these details in writing (if a dispute arises) between you and the contractor/trader before accepting their quotation:
◦ Is the quoted price fixed, and does it include material costs/removals?
◦ Whether the price quoted includes VAT?
◦ Start and finish dates for the project.
◦ Are deposits required? If yes, how much and for what?
◦ Do they guarantee the works, if so, for how long?
◦ Will they be subcontracting any of the works? If yes, are the subcontractors qualified, licensed and insured?
◦ Only pay for work that has been completed – Payment structure, how will payments be made? (Bank transfer, cheque, in instalments as the job progresses, etc.)
